Weirdness in HW 7

I am giving everyone a 5th attempt for HW 7, on account of that weird blank question business on the last question. Itshould be working better now.

I also fixed the round off problem on the 6th question and re-graded all current attempts accordingly. Much better.

Homework 7 is up

Everybody can start work now on Homework 7. Nice.

Lecture C6 is now up for Thursday's students.

The Thursday lecture is now in iTunes U.

Note: part of the podcast was in doc cam mode, so make sure to have the January 28 doc cam PDF handy, as you listen.

CH. 2-4 on exam 1

Due to Section 0003 taking the exam on Tuesday, we will not be able to squeeze any chapter 5 work in before the exam for both sections.

Therefore, both sections will be examined on topocs from chapters 2-4 only.

You guys in MWF section 0004, I will lecture on chapter 5 on Monday.

Homework 6 ready to go!

Your homework assignment #6 is now ready. Sorry for the delay... It is due at the normal time for T/Th section 0003, but I am giving a bit of extra time to you guys in MWF section 0004, but try to tackle it tonight.

Also: I included a few review questions, to assist your exam prep.

Diagnostic bonus = weirded up

For some reason, Webcourses is not downloading your Diagnostic test results accurately. So when I process the data and upload your bonus point, it seems to have gaps.

I will be working on this, so do not get too antsy about it. We will get it squared away eventually.

Podcast and CPS data are up.

Students in T/Th section 0003, your lecture podcast is now UP. Remember, these are visual podcasts in .m4a format, so you have to download the track in order to view the Keynote slides from lecture.

Your CPS scores are now up, too.

Is on iTunes U?

There is a new row in your My Grades page in Webcourses: "Is on iTunes U" by which I keep track of who has accessed iTunes U.

Right now we have 61 of you with "Yes" in that row.

We will be doing a special project with iTunes U, and we want 100% coverage, so get on there and start using it. I will discuss more about this in lecture this week.

Monday, January 25, 2010

CPS is up for today; section 0003 must wait.

I just uploaded this morning's CPS scores to the Webcourses gradebook. Good.

You guys in the T/Th section 0003 will have a zero in that line of your My Grades page until after Tuesday's lecture. So do not freak out. :)

Homework 5 is running.

MWF section 0004, your homework 5 is now available in Webcourses. Usual due date.

Doc cam is UP.

To view the document cam work from today's lecture, you guys in section 0004 can try the January 25 PDF file in the Doc Cam folder of Webcourses.

Saturday, January 23, 2010

CPS data is up.

I just uploaded the CPS scores for both sections. Look in your My Grades page, in Webcourses, You will see two new rows:

C4-L5 answered:This row tells you how many questions you answered and sent to my CPS receiver. The 24 points on your semester grade will be based on this data. You want 85% of these to get all 24 points on your semester grade.

Note: because this is 85% and not 100%, there is some leeway for you if you miss a lecture or two.
C4-L5 correct:Here you see how many questions you actually answered correctly. The 4 bonus points on your semester grade, which I included in your syllabus, depend on this data. You want 75% of these.
Meaning of C and L:

  1. The letter C, third letter in the alphabet, is for section 0003. C4 indicates lecture 4 for section 0004, which we had on Thursday.
  2. L stands for lecture. The MWF section 0004 gets this symbol. Our fifth MWF lecture was Friday, so the CPS data from that day gets the code L5.
So the row of the My Grades page C4-L5 indicates the CPS data for the last lecture of this week in both sections.

It will be an interesting process to keep the CPS data straight this semester, with this kind of staggered section schedule!!

Homework 4

Homework 4 is now available for everybody. As I have mentioned in lecture, it has different due dates for each section, even though Webcourses only shows one "End" day and time. You must go by what I have set up:
  1. Homework 4 disappears and is unavailable at 9:30 AM on Monday for the MWF section 0004.
  2. At 10:30 AM on Tuesday, the HW 4 assignment disappears for everybody in the T/Th section 0003.
It is a pain in the neck, but all we can do is get used to thinking in these terms.

Don't worry -- your brain will click with it an a week or two like you are on autopilot. Good.

P.S. I will be working on some YouTube of the falling meter stick today plus your first round of CPS scores. Keep your eyes open.

Thursday, January 21, 2010

350

There are now 350 students enrolled in CPS. Good.

Still, there are over 100 that have to register. Get with it!!

You guys in section 0003 Tuesdays and Thursdays, today is your first official CPS activity, that gets converted to the 24 points on your semester grade. Get that CPS device squared away before class today!!!!

CPS study guides

In yesterday's and today's lecture, concerning the distance triangle, there were 8 CPS questions. To help you review them, I always post the PDF of the CPS study guide for each session. It is based on S.I. leader Gloria's CPS participation -- usually 100% correct. The images and diagrams are in the PDF, plus the correct answer is indicated.

These are very handy study tools for midterm exam preparation.

Look for the snow-capped mountain in the course home page in Webcourses.

Homework 3 can be tackled now.

For the section 0004 MWF students, your homework assignment 3 is now available in Webcourses. Go for it!

Tuesday lecture is UP

The Tuesday lecture is now up on iTunes U. The sound goes a little shaky in the second half of the podcast, but it is still useable.

Internet Exploder and iTunes U

I just finished helping a student get to our iTunes U podcast area. It was a Windows 7 laptop, runnng Internet Exploder. We got the iTunes U link to navigate correctly from Webcourses by clicking the security dialog boxes that Internet Exploder and Windows 7 throws at you.

Do not just willy nilly buzz through those security dialogue boxes. Bill Gates has it set up so that Windows 7 and Internet Exploder consider links to iTunes as "hostile." Yeah, maybe hostile to his bank account.

You can consider iTunes U to be safe, though.

Homework 3 is now running for T/Th section 0003

You guys in section 0003 Tuesday lecture, you can now log in to Webcourses and start working on HW 3. It includes a few questions that refer to reading ahead in chapter 3. So look at it as a study assignment, too.

Tuesday office hours

I am expanding my office hours to also include 12:30 - 2:00 PM, in MAP412. This is in addition to the other hours.

Here is the full week's schedule:

Monday11:00 AM - noon
Tuesday12:30 - 2:00 PM
Wednesday11:00 AM - noon
ThursdayNo office hours.
Friday11:00 AM - noon

Also, on Friday, we have unofficial office hours in the lecture hall right after lecture for as long as needed, because the stats class does not meet on Friday.

Monday, January 18, 2010

Doc cam for Thursday

The doc cam file is now up for you section 0003 students' Thursday lecture. Look for the Saturn icon on the Webcourses home page.

When you do calculations in Webcourses HW...

When you do homework questions that ask for a numeric answer that you have to calculate, be advised that Webcourses gives you at least one different number for each attempt.

E.g., in the Peregrin Took question, #5 in HW 2, the drop time changes each attempt you take. So each attempt must use a new calculation, though always the same principle.

Saturday, January 16, 2010

Homework 2 is now UP.

All sections:

Homework 2 is now up. There is a special challenge question that has a Youtube attached and requires a bit of reading ahead. As with all homework, this assignment will be due at the beginning of your next lecture: Tuesday, 10:30 AM for section 0003, and Wednesday at 9:30 AM for section 0004.

Go for it!

Spectral lines of hydrogen

We have this video to refresh your mind about the spectral lines of hydrogen.

We viewed hydrogen's spectrum in class on Thursday and Friday. One of the homework questions is about the spectrum.

225

There are now 225 of you, roughly half of you, successfully set up on the CPS roster. Good.

I have been uploading the Pad ID and Serial Numbers to the grade book in Webcourses. So you can know if you are on the roster by looking below the blue bar in your My Grades page in Webcourses. I will keep updating Pad ID and Serial Number over the long weekend, so wait a while and you will see it.

For those of you who registered your clicker halfway last week but it got goofed up and your Pad ID and Serial Number are still not up in Webcourses, call the hotline, 888-333-4988, but select technical help. Tell them that you are registering through the "WebCT Powerlink," and that will help them figure out how to get your name in the roster. There is no class key for you to mess with, when you register through Webcourses.

More early CPS bonus UP.

Friday morning students in section 0004, if your device was on my roster at the time of class, you now have another bonus point.

The rest of you, get that squared away by Wednesday -- and section 0003, by Tuesday -- and you will nab one more bonus point before the official beginning of CPS activity:
  1. Section 0003 official CPS start is Thursday, 1/21.
  2. Section 0004, your start date is Friday, 1/22.

Whoooops

Whoops. The HW 1 was supposed to be 4 points, not 40. (Webcourse defaults every question to 10 points.) I just fixed it, so you guys that had 40 points for HW 1 now have 4.

Don't worry, 4/4 is still 100%. :)

Thursday, January 14, 2010

We will do some more bonus points after each lecture until next Thursday (section 0003) and Friday (section 0004).

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Wednesday podcast UP.

The Wednesday lecture is now up as visual podcast. Subscribe, download and view while you listen.

Section 0004 homework is UP.

Wednesday students, your first homework assignment is now UP. Look in Webcourses for the MIB icon on the home page, then click through to the assignment.

As Bruce Lee said, "I refer to my hands, feet and body as the tools of the trade. The hands and feet must be sharpened and improved daily to be efficient." He is the only human being to defeat Chuck Norris.

Doc cam file is now UP for Wednesday students.

If you dive into the Webcourses area, you will see a little Saturn icon for the doc cam files. Section 0004 students, your doc cam file is there from today's lecture. Go take a look.

New digital video up

You can view Diego's amazing grab on iTunes U. It is a 3.5 minute digital video, L2-0004. Take a look. Should look really nice, because we used an HD video cam.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010
