Which chapters to study, and when to study them?

We discussed chapters and so forth in Friday afternoon lecture, but the morning students also need the scoop. The syllabus does not have the entire semester scheduled out by chapter and so forth. Many instructors do that; I do not.

I always mention the new chapter in lecture. The other day I mentioned that we are in chapter 3 now. That is normally all that I do.

However, I can tell you the list of chapters:

1. 2-8
2. 11-13
3. 15 and 19 as mini-chapters -- i.e., we only dip into a subset of each of these chapters.
4. 20-22
5. 23-25 another set of mini-chapters.

Some of the chapters we will go through slowly, others rapidly.

For midterm exam 1, the questions will cover chapters 2-4 and maybe a bit of chapter 5, everything we get to in lectures up until 9/13.

So you can start reading ahead into chapter 4 if you would like to get a head start. We tackle it next week, and we now have most of the basic concepts down that we'll need for chapter 4.

Emergency textbook strategery

If you are having trouble getting the textbook, or if you are just waiting for it to come in from the UCF bookstore (don't hold your breath), you might want to buy some $5 chapters in PDF from iChapters.com, which is a Cengage website. They can actually sell you the hardcover textbook, too, and they usually get it to you rapidly.

We want the blue hardcover version, not the obsolete white softcover version.

Sell your book to a roommate or friend!

If you have not sold back your textbook yet, you might be able to collect more money for it if you bypass the bookstore. Their price to buy back your book is pitifully low -- I heard $21 -- but they will then turn around your copy and sell it at an outrageous $133. Go ahead and look it up on their website!

It really burns my grits.

So if you sell to a friend or roommate in August at $60, your friend or roommate will save significant dineros and you'll have more than the bookstore will give you at buy back.

Textbook for fall - buy back

You might be able to sell back your 6th edition Physics: A World View at the UCF Bookstore now. We will be using it in fall semester 2009, so I think they will be looking to buy them back.

Unfortunately, it is PITIFUL what they pay.

Thursday's lecture = GO

We will have regular lecture on Thursday morning, back to the normal schedule.

Thursday's lecture will be on gravitation, so do some reading and skimming in chapter 5, if you have 30 min. Especially look at the diagrams and illustrations. We will review and elaborate the blurb on p. 81, "Working it out|Gravity" plus some of the exercises on circular motion and orbits from chapter 4, p. 73:

1. exercise 8, generic circular motion;
2. exercise 9, Earth-Sun orbital system;
3. exercise 10, Earth-Moon orbital system.

Problem solving manual, CB&S

I was at CB&S on Tuesday afternoon, and they had a pile of the optional problem solving manuals for sale, unlike the bookstore in the center of campus.
