Re-constructed last 40 minutes of T5 podcast.

I re-narrated the T5 lecture's last 40 minutes or so:

1. Doc cam, two pages' worth
2. Discussion of Newton's Third Law
3. Normal forces
4. Curved trajectories, starting chapter 4.

The podcast will be available in a few minutes in our iTunes U area. Unlike most podcasts, this reconstructed podcast is a digital video in QuickTime .mov format. Most of our weekly lectures will be in .m4a enhanced audio, which is much more compact.

Anyway, go take a look.

To help you deal with this delay on the full lecture, I will postpone the due date on HW3 til lunchtime on Thursday, so that everyone has a bit of extra leeway.

Welcome aboard, spring 1121ers!

You all are divided into two sections:

1. Sec. 0M01, whom I see face to face on Tuesdays at 10:30 AM, and
2. Sec. 0M02, whom I see face to face on Thursdays at 10:30 AM.

It is a different structure this semester, in that each section will be viewing one lecture per week through UCF's iTunes U server.

Thursday lecture lost in space!

The podcast I recorded on Thursday went off into the ozone layer somewhere. I cannot recover any of it. I prefer to blame it on Agent Smith, in his unending quest for Mr. Anderson.

However, you can get the drop on Agent Smith. He will be surprised to see you locking in on the Wednesday and Friday lecture podcasts for Section 0004. Do that with the PDF of the Thursday doc cam work, and you are ready to go.

But to throw off Agent Smith, I also made two mini-podcasts for iTunes U titled February 18, and they appear normal. Good. That is what we want him to think.

Today's lecture: universal gravitation

Today we will tackle universal gravitation in the section 0004 Monday lecture. Wednesday, you section 0004 students will have exam 1.

Tuesday, section 0003 will go straight to midterm exam 1, and then on Thursday you will launch into chapter 5 on universal gravitation.

Exams are getting scored; see you Friday for lecture.

Exams are in the process of being graded. Perhaps by Friday at lecture, we will have printouts.

By the way, Friday's lecture will have a battery demonstration and we will record in high-def digital video again, with volunteers from the audience. No sparks but definitely interesting.

Monday and Wednesday lectures next week will also have some demonstrations with cell phones and other electric systems. The cell phone demonstration will totally psych your mind.

APOD: Scale of Earth-moon system and a Saturn-moon system

Earlier this semester, we studied the true scale of the Earth-moon system. It is tough to get a good photo of Earth and our moon together, but here is one of Saturn and one of its moons, Tethys, that little blip halfway out and below the rings. Click for full size view. Again, it is plain to see that a moon and its planet are very different sizes. Excellent.

No lecture today; bonus podcast and HW

Due to a family emergency Dr. B must cancel his lectures for today, Monday, Oct. 5, for morning section 0001 and afternoon section 0002. We will return to regular lectures on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

There will be a special bonus podcast in iTunes U later today, and it will form the basis of instruction for a bonus HW assignment, due Wednesday. Keep your eye on Announcements.

Friday lecture; bonus points announcement

We will have regular lecture tomorrow, Sept. 18, with CPS and some formulas workouts, including these similar triangles.

Also we will have a special bonus points announcement that affects EVERYBODY.

Some extra exercises to get ready for lecture

We will start Monday's lecture with Chapter 3 exercises 20 and 24 from pp. 54-55. So if you want solid footing, work them out on your own ahead of time, and then what I add will really strengthen your understanding. Then we will do some CPS together, followed by chapter 4 concepts: how does the geometric relationship of the net force relative to the velocity affect the overall motion.

Q: What did the acorn say when it grew up?
A: Geometry. Gee, I'm a tree!

No lecture this Friday afternoon

We will not have PSC1121 lecture this Friday afternoon -- although your other classes might have lecture meetings as normal.

There is a new blurb page about phase diagrams, which we discussed yesterday in lecture. So take a look in the Lecture Files in Webcourses. There is even a data sheet if you feel like graphing it up on graph paper. SWEEEET

About pendulum periodicity

Chapter 15 has a nice diagram about the forces on a pendulum mass, Fig. 15-3, I think. We treat a pendulum just as if it were a spring IF its amplitude of oscillation is only a few degrees left and right of vertical.

I just activated a new page, "Why a pendulum behaves periodically, like a spring." It has a bunch of diagrams, for those of you who want some extra depth of knowledge. No trig, no calculus, just proportional right triangles. Look for this in the Lecture Files.
