Chuck Norris bonus
Thursday, December 8, 2011
Morning Sec. 0001 scores UP.
You all in the morning lecture section 0001, your scantron scores are up now. Also, your clicker scores are up, making your Final Exam score complete. Now you can get your final semester points total worked out.
Sec. 0002, I am still working on your clicker points.
ALSO: for all sections, I am still processing Chuck Norris data (iClicker and HW) plus several lectures worth of iClicker data. So it will be rolling into place in the next few days.

Point totals now in effect
Per the syllabus, the following point totals are now in effect for figuring out semester grades.
Note: nobody has final tally yet -- finals still being uploaded etc., iClicker data from last two weeks of lecture, etc. are still in flux. But this table shows what we are shooting for, and eventually your semester point total will be complete, falling into one of the above ranges.
ALSO: I do not round off anything other than the HW and clicker pointage. Do not confuse yourself by referring to percentages. Only points determine your semester grade.
Letter grade | Points needed |
---|---|
A | 216 |
B | 180 |
C | 144 |
D | 120 |
F | <120 |

Afternoon sec. 0002, your final scantron scores are up!
Bonus points subtotal
THere is a new row on your My Grades page in Webcourses, "Bonus points subtotal," which tallies up all the bonus point opportunities.
I will be working on bonus points for the next few days, so your subtotal in this row might change up or down, disappear, reappear then disappear again.
I have exam scores from Sec. 0002, the afternoon section. I will try to get them posted this morning or this afternoon. Keep an eye on your My Grades page.

Homework and iClicker pointage
The conversion of your iClicking and homework to pointage on your semester grade is getting down to the wire. I have just activate the iClicker pointage row of your My Grades page in Webcourses.
The iClicker pointage is tricky to compute correctly in Webcourses, because it is not a real spreadsheet. For this reason, I cannot totally guarantee that your iClicker pointage will not change as we click through the last lectures of the semester. But for now, it is looking OK.
You can add up best three midterms, HW and iClicker pointage, then divide by 160 for your percentage going into the final exam.

Fast fast fast
Exam 4 scores, best 3 midterms are UP.
Students in the morning section, you can now see what your best three midterm exams are, a few lines below the score for Exam 4.
Students in afternoon section, your "best three midterms" will not be kosher until we get your exam 4 grades back. They are still in the possession of the red stapler guys in test scoring. Maybe by tomorrow we will have them back.

Bonus point questions OPEN
I just opened up the bonus point opportunity in Discussions.
- Construct a multiple choice question about a concept from the covered chapters and lectures.
- Label the correct option with an * asterisk.
- Below the question, skip a few lines and then type in the day of lecture, the homework assignment, or the page in the textbook that gave rise to your question -- this way other students can study up on this concept.
- In the "Subject:" box, type in a short phrase that describes the concept in your question.
- If your question is good enough to use on the exam, I will award you a bonus point, plus
- you will already know the right answer to it (one question on the exam guaranteed that you know the answer), and
- so will anyone who studies through this discussion area!

Weirdness in HW 15
I corrected a typo in Homework 15 this morning, changing "proton" to →→ "proton 1" and it goofed up the scoring for some reason.
To correct for it, the do-over in tonight's HW 16 is for 8 points, double what it was for HW 15. If I can't get it squared away on HW 15, then do not fret about it. I will adjust the points total at the end of the semester, and even if I were not to do so, 4 points out of a few hundred is not going to change anyone's HW pointage by much if anything.

Logs
If you want to start estimating your semester grade -- as if I were to award it now -- you can refer to these two new files in Webcourses:
In addition to the HW and clicker pointage, you have exam pointage that goes straight into the semester grade without conversion.
- Homework log, which gives you a rundown of the homework points we have had so far this semester. These homework points will be converted to 20 points on your semester grade, as discussed in the syllabus. The homework log is linked to the homework folder, at the top of the page.
- i>Clicker 2 log, which does the same thing for how many clicker questions we have asked in class so far. The number of i>Clicker 2 questions you answer will also be converted to another 20 points on your semester grade, as discussed in the syllabus. Look for this log file linked to the course home page, with the little i>Clicker 2 icon.

Doppler shift, freight trains
There are tons of rail fans uploading to YouTube, and many of their videos let you listen to a nice Doppler shift. Here is one we listened to in lecture today -- one among zillions that you could listen to.
Listen to the trains blow their horn, in the first 45 sec. or so, then a bell ringing at 5:20 and and an excellent horn at 7:15.

Standing waves from spring semester
Take a look at the standing wave demonstration from last spring, Gloria and Lee operating the Slinky.
You can read more about standing waves and harmonics on pp. 129-130 of our present textbook.
Here is another YouTube, with Amanda and Rylee. They actually get up to the 2nd excited state. Nice.

Clicker question #38 is UP.
I just posted the iClicker question points for Exam 2. It was a "heat-melt-heat" calculation.
Also, there is a new row with the actual answer you sent, plus an indication of whether it was correct or incorrect. About half of each section got it correct.
P.S. three students with unregistered iClickers did not get points.
